I had the pleasure of watching a morning news program on the television while at the gym this morning. It had a New Year’s Resolution theme to it and so of course they had a fitness trainer come and share her new 100%-guaranteed-to-work gadget with the television host.
It looked similar to this.
Watching him attempt to perform the high level and complicated exercises that she was doing on the step was almost as painful as watching Nick Viall from this season’s Bachelor, cup Corrine’s naked breasts at their group date photo shoot!
Oh…my.
Suffice it to say, it was hard to watch, but I couldn’t look away.
The trainer had a great routine going. It was on point, to the beat and for a seasoned vet it would have been a stellar workout. But for the host, who looked like he tore every ligament in his groin when he lunged backwards off the step, it looked like he was counting down the seconds before they could cut to commercial.
As I watched it, I had one thought: He is never doing that again.
Of course he’s not. He’s a guy, and if he does anything to stay fit he will probably just lift some weights or go for a run. And I get that it was just a fitness segment and it was part of his job to “try it out”.
That being said, where my thoughts go is to all the newbies out there trying fitness again, or maybe for the first time. To the person who thought about joining a gym for months before and who finally decided to commit. To those who already feel embarrassed about their bodies and their abilities.
To you I say this: Start slow.
Please don’t jump into an elite level UFC bootcamp or attempt to beat the time of a long time cross fit athlete. Just be you and go at your pace and ability. We want you in it for the long haul, for the rest of your life. So it’s okay that this fitness style may not be for you because there is definitely a style that will fit just right.
Start slow, and don’t stop.
I just so happen to have the perfect way for you to start.
In February, Move Daily Fitness is hosting another challenge! This time, we want you to track and commit to #DSD (Do Something Daily)! The challenge is to do some physical activity every single day for a minimum of 15 minutes. That could mean going for a walk, doing the stairs in your office at lunch, attending a class, swimming, or even dancing the night away!
The choice is yours. The goal is to move daily. Sign up today on our contest page and if you move daily for the whole month, you could win a S’well water bottle!
